The Truth About Tea And Medication Interactions

Do you know that herbal and green teas can alter how over the counter and prescription medications work?  Most people don’t consider what they drink having an effect on how their medication words.  Let’s talk about tea and medication interactions.

Certain teas can enhance or reduce the effectiveness of certain medications.

If you take Coumadin, it is most likely prescribed to treat or prevent clots.  It does this by reducing Vitamin K activity in the body, which plays an important role in allowing our blood to clot, so we don’t bleed.  Some green teas contain Vitamin K which can cause Coumadin to be less effective.

Chamomile tea has a calming effect and may make one feel sleepy because of the chemical compound it contains.  Drinking this tea while you are taking benzodiazepines such as Valium or Xanax, may enhance the effectiveness of this medication.

If you take Metoprolol to help manage hypertension or heart disease, the caffeine in these teas may increase your blood pressure, also causing the medication to be less effective.

Most teas are safe when used in moderation, and some offer health benefits, but it’s always best that you discuss drinking them with your health care provider to ensure it is safe for you.  Consider all supplements when reviewing your diet and medications with your healthcare provider so you can determine if there will be any tea and medication interactions.
